B.S. Student Outcomes

B.S. program of the METU Mechanical Engineering Department aims its students to acquire the following knowledge, skills, and behaviors by the time of their graduation.

  • Ability to establish the relationship between mathematics, basic sciences and engineering sciences with engineering applications.
  • Ability to find and interpret information.
  • Ability to follow the literature and technology related to his/her topic of interest.
  • Recognition of the need to keep oneself up to date in his/her profession.
  • Possession of written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct team work (within the discipline, inter-disciplinary, multi-disciplinary).
  • Ability to produce original solutions.
  • Use of scientific methodology in approaching and producing solutions to engineering problems and needs.
  • Openness to all that is new.
  • Ability to conduct experiments.
  • Ability to do engineering design.
  • Awareness of engineering ethics, knowledge and adoption of its fundamental elements.
  • Ability to take societal, environmental and economical considerations into account in professional activities.
  • Possession of pioneering and leadership characteristics in areas related to the profession.

M.S. Student Outcomes

  • Acquires the fundamental scientific knowledge required to analyze and solve advanced-level problems in the field of mechanical engineering.
  • Gains the competence to utilize advanced engineering mathematics methods in the formulation, analysis, and solution of engineering problems.
  • Conducts literature reviews using printed and online sources, analyzes the collected literature, and identifies the current state-of-the-art in the relevant scientific field.
  • Demonstrates the ability to prepare and deliver a seminar on a technical subject.
  • Develops the ability to conduct independent research on a specific topic and solve advanced engineering problems.
  • Contributes to the national and/or international body of knowledge through original research.
  • Gains the competence to effectively communicate the process and results of research conducted on a specific subject through scientifically structured written reports and oral presentations.
  • Acquires the ability to publish research findings as articles in national and/or international scientific journals and/or present them as papers at conferences.
  • Acts in accordance with universal principles of research and publication ethics.

Ph.D. Student Outcomes

  • Acquires the fundamental scientific knowledge required to analyze and solve advanced-level problems in the field of mechanical engineering.
  • Gains the competence to utilize advanced engineering mathematics methods in the formulation, analysis, and solution of engineering problems.
  • Conducts literature reviews using printed and online sources, analyzes the collected literature, and identifies the current state-of-the-art in the relevant scientific field.
  • Identifies areas for original contribution within a specific topic and proposes a research plan to be conducted using a scientific methodology.
  • Develops the ability to conduct research in accordance with a specified work plan.
  • Develops the ability to conduct independent research on a specific topic and solve advanced engineering problems.
  • Makes an original contribution to the global body of knowledge by conducting innovative research.
  • Gains the competence to effectively communicate the process and results of research conducted on a specific subject through scientifically structured written reports and oral presentations.
